A year ago i had prepared a solar system on the basis of hollow glass and water in it shown below....
After critical thinking, i understood that this design is not at all tolerant of even a minor earthquake.
The reason being water a liquid hence when shocks are felt, the inertia of liquid will act differently than glass and force developed inside the glass will cause a rupture of the covering. And glass is not flexible as you may know i hope. That means it wont be a rigid system as a whole or even flexible whatever be the diameter of sphere..
I dont think the government will let such a design be erected at all.
But the main disadvantage of using water at all is dispersion property of water., do you see the shadow on the ground at http://solartribune.com/2012-09-12glass-spheres-might-be-the-future-of-solar-energy/ ?
this shadow is not completely black, i.e. light is not being focused to the point accurately because of dispersion property of water. Hence the whole idea of focusing at a point is being ignored and only cost effectiveness is achieved. It is like a china item. No guarantee.
Thats not the end, more the thickness of the glass more is the light being wasted as it will have lesser focal length and will not focus at the point intended and lesser the glass more is the design delicate.
Do you know now that this idea is a basic and obvious thought and not a calculated, perfected product.
Actually the water idea was my inspiration from a fish bowl i once kept in sunlight, If you see this video at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dHkRenbvqOg.
You should also know that It will not make it in the post prototype stage.
Here i had used polycarbonate instead of glass because glass is brittle and would not be best choice in case of sudden shock or somebody throwing stone at it. I have built up my current design at http://www.sparktherise.com/projectdetails.php?pId=7060 by learning from the flaws of this one below.
In the universe there cannot be a perfect system So, designing is crucial with respect to outcomes and not on monetary reasons. I hope you understand and reply me if any doubts. at pranil_masti@yahoo.co.in
